Introduction: North Coast Regional Quality Control Board
There are nine semi-autonomous regional water quality control boards statewide. Each is comprised of seven part-time Board positions appointed for four-year terms by the Governor and confirmed by the Senate. (Currently North Coast Board has one vacancy.) Each Regional Board makes critical water quality decisions for its region, including setting standards through Basin Plan Amendment process, issuing waste discharge requirements, determining compliance with those requirements, and taking appropriate enforcement actions. The North Coast Regional Quality Control Board (Regional Board), includes Sonoma County north of Petaluma, all the way to the Oregon border. Southern Sonoma County, including Petaluma, Sonoma, and the Valley of the Moon area are part of the Bay Area Water Quality Control Board.
